SMILE
Cumberland SMILE Program
Sensory Motor Instructional Leadership Experience
Objective:
- to provide a recreational experience and developmental support to children with special needs in a community setting.
- to provide a respite opportunity for parents and caregivers.
- to provide valuable leadership experience to program volunteers.
Cumberland SMILE is a partnership project of the Cumberland Early Intervention Program an the Cumberland YMCA.
SMILE is a Saturday morning recreational and developmental program for children with special needs between the ages of 3-21 years old.
Cumberland SMILE has been active since 1997. Two eight week sessions are offered each year in the fall and winter at the Cumberland YMCA.
Children participate one-on-one with a volunteer each Saturday morning for an hour in the gym followed by an hour in the pool. Quiet room activities for crafts, conversation and fine motor activities are also included.
Volunteers are responsible for planning the weekly activities which promote development and build on each child's individual strengths. Each week group activities are also planned for the gym and pool by program leaders.
Volunteers come from the community and from Mount Allison University. All volunteers are screened and given a half day training module before the program begins.
Cumberland SMILE promotes growth and development in an atmosphere of fun and success.
